A nice spate of water which is hanging on in the Oak and retreating in the other area smaller tribs back to the base Canal feed. Darker and some old moldy salmon are still around. This weekend, we had some pretty good fishing despite getting beat up by the rough seas. Another unseasonably warm day today with chance of showers tonight. Temperatures have finally started dropping with cooler weather setting in. Tuesdays fishing was EPIC despite it being a bit breezy. More fish are holding and staging now in fast water areas below the dam. Oak Orchard River Salmon Fishing (Any Cat Fish at the Dam?) Fish are still spawning in the typical areas on or near gravel. A little bit hard to stay on top of trib water flows as it seems like Canal drainage water is being passed thru with select adjustments on the water managers end that only they know about. Fishing pressure is real light with one or two guys reporting a few fresher looking steelhead hooked up. No serious cold snap is seen in the near term forecast. Flows in the Oak were higher yesterday but expecting that to retreat again toward medium and slightly stained. Spoon grabbing fun hard fighters with a dark skein wagon thrown in too for mid/end Sept 2021 at the Oak Orchard Rivermouth. Boat angling easily the least expensive bargain for big salmonid angling chances where you get to feel the strike and experience an honest battle without heavier trolling gear. Little to no fishing pressure because of the recent events, with the few anglers out enjoying action like this for early Apr 2020 steelhead in the Oak. Rivermouth action has been slow to start but might be picking up as near shore waters cooled down a touch after couple days of med E winds. Our best spoons were Geezer, UV Watermelon, Midnight Special, Wonderbread, and 42nd. All the trib flows are on the retreat from the last rain. So anglers can mix it up with that turbine tunnel action at the dam or they can work their way downstream for more traditional drifts thru holes and runs. Careful and hardy drifters have hooked up on some bright steelhead. A nice mid week weather period now after the holiday weekend with clear and warm days forecast today and tomorrow. And then theres always that concentration of fish and people at the dam. This latest rise in flows and continued cool down should kick off better brown trout migrations in the Oak setting up good drifting chances into November and maybe into December with reasonable weather hanging in. So with light angling pressure in the Oak, a few drop backs, spawners and fresh fish have been encountered in the low and clear flows. Look for some hook-ups by covering that different water and putting in a few hours. Next chance at snow for area wide is for the beginning part of next week. There is plenty of water cover to hide fish or to encourage any late migrations of browns or early migrations of steelhead. And maybe into the early spring! Remember the turbine channel can only get so high due to how much flow can pass thru the hydro plant. Well just have to wait and see if itll be a hard and fast melt or something a little more moderate and gradual. Still no real cool down afoot and the forecast ahead thru the weekend and maybe some of next week looks warm. Thanks to this forecast, flows in the Oak and other area smaller tribs will be (again) on the way to high, blown and dirty. Upstream swamp headwater supplies seem brim full so look for flows to be pretty well maintained and on a continued slow clearing. After several days of strong west winds both charter and Rec boats got back out. That sounds like a receipe for fresh fish migrations in all the waterways and the chance for brown trout and steelhead hook ups! This will go down as a trip of a lifetime for them as well as for us. With no real winter to come out of and trib and open lake water temps all on the warmer side, who knows for sure how the steelhead gods will play things out over the next couple months?!
